The Ability to Change

Currently, the European teachers face various challenges and changing educational goals.
Two fundamental questions related to these challenges are:

  • How do the teachers typically react to the various challenges?
  • How can the attitudes and behaviour of the teachers be changed, in order to accomplish the new objectives?

Some significant answers to these important questions are now provided by the project EuroREAD.
EuroREAD is a project funded by the Socrates programme action III.3.1 concerning the flexibility and ability to change among teachers.

The results of the project include an analysis of the major common factors that determine why some teachers are open to change and why some are resistant.
An external evaluation of the project by Dr. Bent B. Andresen, Denmark, concludes, that the project has managed to identify and analyse important indicators of open and innovative teachers. These indicators, which are stated and documented in the final EuroREAD report, include the teachers' attitudes towards new methods of teaching and learning, new approaches of evaluation, new methods of in-service teacher education, new research findings and knowledge about the information and communication technologies Furthermore, the project has designed a study of greater magnitude regarding teachers' ability to adopt changes. The large-scale project proposed concerns the openness of teachers towards pedagogical changes. In addition, the project has identified some significant indicators of an open, innovative organisation of the schools. They include the development plans, which encompass pedagogical/organisational visions and objectives, and the teamwork of teachers to reach the goals.

These indicators are also stated and documented in the EuroREAD report.
The external evaluation concludes: No refocusing or changes to the project plan was needed, and the objectives of project EuroREAD have been reached. The outcomes of the project are of high value, since they document the essential factors of the development of the schools in order to meet the requirements of the 21st century.
